Becoming an Activist Eater:

Eating our way out of Climate Change!

COVID-19 revealed how precarious it can be to rely solely on the global food supply chain.  While the rest of the world scrambled to find toilet paper and witnessed empty shelves at the chain grocery stores, our local food hubs were never short of healthy delicious foods.

Rebuilding and supporting our local food system is about more than food. It’s about battling economic and racial inequality, fighting climate change, and preserving community spaces that steward the land. And our local food is quite tasty to boot!

But how is eating local food related to climate change?

  • Local food is fresher and doesn't have to travel as many miles to your plate. Buying local food reduces your carbon footprint because your food travels fewer miles from farm to table.

  • Local farmers tend to raise food in ways that conserve resources, reduce fossil fuel and chemical use, and or practice agricultural methods that pull down and trap carbon from the atmosphere.

  • Visit your local farmers market, farm stand, or farm-to-table restaurant.

  • Join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). A CSA is a program in which people sign up to buy a share of the farm’s harvest over a specific period of time (often a basket of produce once a week during the harvest season).

  • Regularly buy from local farms and farmers that practice the type of agricultural methods that we need for a more sustainable and resilient future.

  • Learn more about regenerative farming and how crops and livestock raised this way sequester carbon. Buy food that supports this way of farming.
